Nashville award-winning songwriter Hal Bynum died June 2 at age 87.

He is best known as the co-writer of the Kenny Rogers mega hit “Lucille”, with collaborator Roger Bowling (1944-1982). Bynum was also a spoken word artist and performer.

Harold Lynn Bynum was born in West Texas in 1934 and attended Texas Tech in Lubbock. He served in the United States Navy and started writing country songs as a young man. His first recorded song was “I’m Hot to Trot”, recorded by Terry Fell in 1953. George Jones recorded Bynum’s “The Old, Old House” in 1963, and the songwriter moved to Nashville five years later. late. “The Old, Old House” went on to become a bluegrass favorite recorded by Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Peter Rowan, Country Gazette, IIIrd Tyme Out and Marty Stuart.

Country superstar Jim Reeves recorded Bynum’s “Nobody’s Fool” shortly before his death in 1964, and the song became a posthumous top 10 hit for Reeves in 1970. The songwriter’s other notable event in 1970 came when Ray Price recorded “You Can’t Take”. It’s with you. This song has also been recorded by Wynn Stewart, Johnny Bush, Clinton Gregory and Kenny Price.

Johnny Cash recorded Bynum’s “Papa Was a Good Man” the following year, and it became a top 20 hit. In 1973 Jeanne Pruett recorded “I’ve Been So Wrong For So Long”, and a year later Diahann Carroll presented “Easy to Love”, which was covered by Tom Jones.

During her career, Bynum wrote over 200 songs. They have been recorded by artists such as Merle Haggard, Ernest Tubb, Jimmy Dickens, Curtis Potter, TG Sheppard, Dave & Sugar, Charlie Rich, Diana Trask, Cal Smith, John Anderson and Roy Clark.

His songwriting career went gold with “Lucille.” The song turned Kenny Rogers into a pop and country superstar, won him a Grammy, sold a million, became a country standard, and earned Bynum and Bowling the CMA Song of the Year award in 1977.

This success was followed by “There Ain’t No Good Chain Gang”, co-written with Dave Kirby. He rose to the top of the charts in a duet of Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash in late 1978.

Bynum co-wrote 1987’s “As If I Didn’t Know” with Mel Tillis, and it was recorded by Suzy Bogguss, as well as Lee Greenwood. One of the songwriter’s most frequent collaborators was Bud Reneau, with whom he wrote “Chains.” He topped the charts for Patty Loveless in 1990.

In the late 1990s Hal Bynum began a second career as a spoken word recording artist. Jim Ed Norman produced Bynum’s philosophical book If I could do anything (1998) on Warner Bros. Records. Bynum followed this with two more albums on his own label, The promise (2002) and An American Prayer (2004). The promise was also the title of his 2002 autobiography.

Hal Bynum passed away peacefully after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease and a final stroke. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Rebecca Jan Bynum; his sons, Scott Thomas Bynum of Farmington, New Mexico and Christopher David Bynum of Brooklyn, New York and by two grandchildren and two nieces.

The family will gather at his home in Nashville to celebrate his life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Urantia Community on its behalf.

IIn April, Bend-based band DRIFT released their debut album, the 12-track acoustic rock collection titled “The Innocents.” DRIFT features the talents of Mark Quon, Terrence Neal, John Allen, Matthew Fletcher and Linda Quon. Now the band is set to host a release party this Friday at the Volcanic Theater Pub.

  • Mark Quon says DRIFT is feeling both excited and anxious for the exit show.

Mark Quon has been playing and creating music in central Oregon since 2005. You know him for his work with The Quons, the folk duo with his wife and musical collaborator Linda; Parlor four folk rooms; and David Bowie tribute band Aladinsane, who play their final gig on July 6 at Worthy Brewing. The five-track debut is packed with vivid imagery and soothing sound that will draw listeners in.

“We’ve been together for about three years now. It’s our first recorded album. The band kind of grew. It started as a trio, and it was myself, Terrence Neal and John Allen. Then we added my wife Linda and Matthew, the drummer; he’s our newest addition,” Quon said.

Something I noticed immediately about “The Innocents” was its storytelling, which Quon emphasized he wanted people to focus on. Throughout the 12 songs, there’s inspiration from all points of Quon’s life: his friends, and even the world around us.

“My Life” was inspired by Quon’s father, with the discomfort and dissatisfaction of letting go at the end of his life. “Road I’m Runnin'” is inspired by his brother’s struggles and is a song that can be important for anyone who is going down a tough road. Then there are songs from his own dreams, and sometimes from other people as well.

“I get a lot of inspiration from dreams. I’m a bit of a heavy dreamer and a bit of a dark dreamer. When I tell people about my dreams, they’re like, ‘What the hell is that?’ , Quon shares. “‘Into another Dream’ is not about my dream, it’s about my wife’s. I could hear her laying next to me, and you can tell when someone’s having a bad dream, you know? I reached out and tried to shake it This song is about someone else’s experience and wondering what they’re dreaming about.

The title track of the album is one in particular that struck me on first listen. Opening with the chatter of birds and the natural world, the song reflects on and attempts to envision what Earth might be like without the humans living on it. Thanks to Marvin Gaye and what Quon calls his pessimistic attitude, the song is a beautiful, sad and powerful opening. It also happens to be one of Quon’s favorites.

“This song was born – my wife and I were painting the living room and Marvin Gaye’s ‘Mercy Mercy Me’ came out, and I remembered this song when I was a teenager. I had forgotten about it and I realized how he was singing about the environment and the destruction of the Earth and that kind of inspired me to write a sequel. I’m a self-proclaimed pessimist that I know we’re never going to figure it out,” he said.

Quon warns that this album isn’t the one for you if you’re looking for a soundtrack that feels good and motivates you. If you’re looking to be moody and reflect on certain things in life, then DRIFT is the way to go. As a band in general, these five musicians make music that many don’t hear too often in central Oregon.

“I think our music is different from most of the music that happens in central Oregon. There are a lot of jam-type bands, or bluegrass bands, and this band is none of them. C “It’s more of a reflective music and storytelling. It’s like the singer-songwriter puts more emphasis on rock. It’s definitely not a dance type of music,” Quon laughs.

Those interested in the launch party can obtain tickets online at bendticket.com. There will be a small amount of physical CDs available, and “The Innocents” is also available on Bandcamp, Apple Music, and Spotify.

With all the experts and tutorials available online, there is a ton of information about learning piano. And while some of these can help you on your journey to becoming a better pianist, there are a lot of things that can go wrong. The interpreters you find online aren’t always the experts you’re looking for, most aren’t actually teachers, and sometimes they aren’t even experts at all. And then there is the problem that all beginners face: where to start?

Pianote’s online piano method, song tutorials and experienced piano coaches led by Lisa Witt promise a different experience – one that not only helps you build piano skills, but also provides a learning environment. online that has the support of real teachers who help piano students have fun while learning at their own pace. Anxious to see if the claims were real, I logged on to check it out.

Main characteristics

Pianote has a few standout features: The first that most piano students will come across and appreciate is its organization. The Pianote Method features ten well-organized levels, each with step-by-step video lessons and exercises designed to help piano students learn the right thing at the right time. It’s a clear path and one that focuses on developing basic skills – something that’s easy to miss if you “steal” it with random online tutorials. Learning in the right order not only makes future lessons easier to tackle, but strengthens your musical knowledge so you can be confident when playing and won’t forget what you’ve learned.

While the Piannote method teaches basic skills, such as different musical styles, reading music and the basics of harmony, the focus is on teaching basic skills and Why these basic elements are important to becoming a better pianist. Throughout the lessons, there are constant reminders that the goal is to play the beautiful music you love, and that playing the piano – and learning – should be a fun way of self-expression, not a chore.

There is on-demand access to over 20 full courses and over 320 lessons focused on specific skills, styles and techniques. Pianote also keeps track of all your progress and sets you on a learning path.

Most lessons at Pianote focus on the piano, but there are other interesting segments, like insights into songwriting with the creator, Josh Dion, and introductions to jazz, improvisation, and gospel. , even Latin jazz.

Every beginning piano student loves to learn So be it and lean on me and there are hundreds of YouTube tutorials that will show you how, but Pianote takes a different route. Using over 100 song tutorials, Pianote’s instructors not only explain exactly how to play your favorite songs, but teach the basic skills as you go. You can play along with backing tracks, adjust the tempo, and create practice loops that will help build your playing.

For me, the most outstanding feature of Pianote is the way the materials are presented with real teachers, an impressive group of “coaches” who teach and inspire. To get the full experience, I took a class with a star trainer, Victoria Theodore. Theodore, who has performed with popular music artists like Stevie Wonder and Beyonce, tackles what has to be one of the most challenging lessons for beginner pianists – A Beginner’s Guide to Classical Piano.

Theodore presents all the basics of classical piano study, including warm-up, fingering, hand position, practice, and more, in short, well-formatted lessons to get students playing quickly. The course focuses on skill development with the goal of helping the student make beautiful piano music with good technique. Her presentation is informative, positive and encouraging as she shows students exactly what to do.

Victoria Theodore’s Classical Piano is an excellent course for developing beginner piano skills and a painless introduction to classical piano music. It’s built around simple pieces that illustrate each era of classical music, rather than drilling students through scales and exercises.

Advantages

Pianote has well-organized practice tools and an approach designed to keep students engaged, plus it offers all the benefits of online lessons with anytime access. Real instructors – experts in different musical styles – song tutorials and tools help you learn, and the cost is much less than private lessons at $197.00 per year. You can even try Pianote for 90 days risk-free if you’re not sure if it’s right for you.

The inconvenients

With so many styles to choose from, training packs, forums, and courses, the number of materials can be overwhelming to choose from initially.

Verdict

Pianote combines a friendly and professional approach with well-organized materials, tools and online events to keep a community of students motivated and interested. It’s as close as it gets to all the benefits of private education for those committed to learning online. However, if a typical online track isn’t enough, you can also set up private lessons through the website. Pianote offers a fun and informative experience for beginners as they can explore different musical styles with different instructors at their own pace and without pressure. There’s a lot to learn at Pianote and qualified instructors who are ready to help. Definitely worth checking out on Pianote.com.

Ray Parker Jr., the R&B star and singer-songwriter best known for the ‘Ghostbusters’ theme, gets the documentary treatment in Sony Pictures Entertainment’s ‘Who You Gonna Call?’, which will premiere takes place on June 7 – watch the trailer below.

As the documentary shows, there’s much more to Parker’s career than this theme song: He had numerous R&B hits under his own name and as the frontman of the band Raydio, and by his mid-teens became a session guitarist in high demand, especially with Motown. like Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, the Temptations and especially Stevie Wonder, even touring with his band when they opened for the legendary Rolling Stones American tour in 1972. He then worked with Herbie Hancock, Barry White, Boz Scaggs and many more. Wonder and Hancock both appear in the film.

More Variety

Parker granted filmmaker Fran Strine her archives and stories to tell her story — from growing up on the segregated streets of Detroit in the 1960s to winning a Grammy and even getting her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Parker says, “From an early age, I knew I wanted to be a musician. It was my dream. My life. I did everything and everything I could to make this happen. I would like to say that luck was on my side, but I think dedication and determination to achieve my dreams played a bigger role. I always tell young musicians if you want something then work hard and go for it. When you find something you’re good at, the fun part comes with the ride! Don’t think about option 2 either. Make option 1 a reality. You are the only one to realize it. Know that creating music is a collaborative process, so always deliver, have fun, and enjoy the process. This usually guarantees reminders.

Strine says, “When I interviewed Ray for my previous documentary ‘Hired Gun’, I knew there was a bigger story to tell. From the moment I sat down with him, I was instantly hooked on telling his life story. When most people think of Ray Parker Jr, they think of “Ghostbusters”. Yes, he had a lot of success with this song, but Ray is much more than that. The list of legendary artists that Ray has performed and written with is staggering and people don’t know that side of him. After learning more about him, I immediately knew I had to tell his story. I’m sure people will be inspired by his life story, as I always do, watching this movie.
