Singer-songwriter Paul DeRosa celebrates and inspires Canadian Paralympians with “Champion” and “Toucher Les Étoiles”

At all times – but especially now in 2022 – the love, support and inspiration for our fellow human beings can never be abundant enough. This cut can always use an add-on and, in support and tribute to all of the incredible Paralympic athletes competing in the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Games, Canadian singer-songwriter Paul DeRosa has created powerful new theme songs in English and Spanish. French to help propel our competitors to gold medal glory. “Champion” and “Touching The Stars” are both available now.

The two theme songs feature in coverage of the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Games on CBC/Radio-Canada and various streaming platforms, culminating two years of a creative journey in which the lifelong Toronto musician and songwriter has felt a personal rebirth.

“Over the past two years, I’ve had the good fortune to meet many of Canada’s top Paralympians and those engagements have had a profound positive impact on me,” says DeRosa. “It gave me the strength and the courage to move forward despite the upheaval of our world due to the pandemic.”

This new pair of theme songs marks the second time DeRosa’s music has been used for the Paralympic Games. His song “Shine” became the official theme song for the Canadian Paralympic Team during the Tokyo 2020 Games, which were postponed to August/September 2021 due to our global pandemic.

Watching athletes compete and strive to achieve personal bests was a big inspiration for DeRosa. “Witnessing their resilience and determination as they competed in the Tokyo Games last summer rekindled my passion for songwriting,” notes DeRosa. “I realized that being a champion is much more important than winning a medal. It’s about our inner strength and our ability to push harder when barriers appear. Paralympic spirit.

“Champion” and “Toucher Les Étoiles” also mark the second time that DeRosa has collaborated with Canadian Idol winner and platinum recording artist Eva Avila on a Paralympic project. In 2019, Avila sang lead vocals for the English and French versions of DeRosa’s “Shine” used for the Tokyo Paralympics. For Beijing 2022, she co-wrote “Toucher Les Étoiles” with DeRosa and Alexandre Désilets and sings lead vocals on this version of this year’s theme, while DeRosa sings lead vocals on “Champion.”

“Collaborating with the talented Eva Avila, musicians and technicians, and the Canadian Paralympic Team to compose and perform ‘Champion’ was a remarkable experience for which I will always be grateful.”

“Champion” and “Toucher Les Étoiles” were heard throughout the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Games from March 4 to 13, broadcast on CBC/Radio-Canada, AMI and Sportsnet, and streamed on multiple platforms, including paralympic. ca, cbc.ca, radio-canada.ca, CBC Gem, CBC and Radio-Canada Sports apps, Amazon Prime Video, CPC, CBC and Radio-Canada digital platforms.
